Female Safety Footwear Evolves

Female Safety Footwear Evolves Functionality and safety are not always comfortable bedfellows with fashion so it's no surprise that protective footwear in general, specifically female styles have not always been the most aesthetically pleasing occupant of the worker's footlocker. However, recent technological advances such as improved manufacturing techniques and advanced materials have enabled designers to drastically improve the visual appeal of the much maligned safety boot and bring it in line with the kind of products you would see in the high street. December sees the launch of the Bella safety footwear range, an array of ladies protective footwear styles hand-picked by us to offer perhaps the most...

MI5 on the hunt for Health & Safety head

MI5 on the hunt for Health & Safety head For the health and safety experts who find the day job a little too pedestrian, a more glamorous position is up for grabs at MI5.   The British intelligence agency's website is advertising for a Head of Health and Safety. The only potential problem for applicants is that the secret service have also shrouded the job description in secrecy -   "We can’t show you the buildings" explains the advert, "We can’t talk about the people you’ll work with. We can’t tell you much about the job. We can’t give you the exact locations. We can’t mention the kind of technology involved."     It does go on however to explain that MI5 will off...

The Hoodie: A not so modern classic

The Hoodie: A not so modern classic The hoodie is a garment that has a modern history going back around eighty years, but has its design roots in medieval Europe, when monks favoured a cowl-type hood attached to a tunic or robe.   The contemporary hoodie first emerged as a functional item of workwear in the US in the 1930s, where it was used to insulate workers from the chilling temperatures of upstate New York.    The term 'hoodie' was not officially coined until the 1990s, but it was two decades earlier when high fashion and street culture collided to popularise the design. Sylvester Stallone famously donned the hoodie as an item of training wear in the 1976 film Rocky. ...

The Crocodile at Work & Play

The Crocodile at Work & Play With all eyes on Wimbledon, we thought it might be interesting to take a look at one of leisure and workwear's most iconic designs and its roots in the glamorous world of the 1920s tennis circuit.   The modern polo shirt was invented by Jean René Lacoste, world number one in 1926 and 1927 and winner of seven grand slam singles titles.   Lacoste's idea was to replace traditional tennis attire: the long sleeved shirt, tie and flannels, which he considered too cumbersome and uncomfortable.    His design was a white, short-sleeved shirt in a loose piqué cotton knit. It had an unstarched, flat collar with a three button placket that could be easily...

An Embroidered History

An Embroidered History The art of sewing to reinforce, mend and alter garments can be dated back to ancient China in the 3rd to 5th Century b.c. This functional practise evolved into the art of embroidery, which has changed very little in the course of human history.   An example from migration period Sweden from between 700 and 300 a.d. / c.e. Displays many techniques including running stitches, back stitches, buttonhole stitches, tailor's stitches and whip stitching. It is not known however if the work on this particular artefact is functional or decorative.   The 16t century chronicler  Abu al-Fazl ibn wrote “His majesty (Mughal Emperor Akbar,) pays much attention...

Putting Helly Hansen to the Test

Putting Helly Hansen to the Test December 14th, 2011: I will soon be testing some Helly Hansen Workwear garments in what looks likely to be (according to the forecast) some fairly challenging conditions. At the moment it looks like winds of up to 25 mph and temperature lows of -1° c, so not particularly extreme, but as I shall be spending most of the day until late evening out in the elements I wanted to be well prepared. As many of you experienced outdoor people will know, being comfortable outdoors is all about layering – clothes that allow moisture to flow through to the outer layers, and materials that do not hold moisture. Keeping warm and dry is essential.   The base layer of my garment...

Safety footwear – or is it?

Safety footwear – or is it? Monday 20 June 2011: For years safety footwear manufacturers have been trying to make their footwear look not like safety footwear! Up until recent years they have "in the main" failed with rather bulbous toecaps being the obvious give away. However when looking at some of the styles that Cofra offer the line between high street styles and safety footwear begins to blur. As we all know if any item of personal protection equipment looks and feels good to wear it is much more likely to be accepted into the workplace. This is why Cofra has spent millions in designing safety footwear that you will want to wear. Many Cofra styles use low profile safety toecaps, frequently thes...

Polo Shirt Embroidery Peterborough

Most of us like a good quality polo shirt – worn for both work and play the traditional polo with its button up front and collar have proved to be a popular alternative to the shirt and tie, whilst looking considerably smarter than a t-shirt. So what are the differences between the most commonly available workwear polo shirts on the market place today and what do you need to look out for? Ok well lets start with the basics, garment weight –  lighter weight polo shirts are often around the 180-200gsm with premium options weighing in at 230-250gsm. Of course a polo shirt is designed for all year round use and therefore  heavyweight polo shirts can often be too h...

How valuable is your hearing

Hearing protection - Ear Plugs, Corded or Uncorded, Ear Defenders or Ear Muffs Each and every one of us has a favourite sound; the dawn chorus, a cat purring, the laughter of a child, waves crashing on the shore or the acceleration of a powerful car can all raise the human spirit. The ear is a complicated and delicate apparatus that converts pressure waves to recognisable sound with dierent pitch, intensity and tone quality. Airborne vibrations enter the ear canal and begin a process that results in sound being processed by the brain. These v...
